Discussion from groups
What is art?

The arts are a basic form of human communication. The visual arts, music, literature, and poetry may be considered the means by which people, past and present, express themselves in unique sights and sounds that capture the interest, imagination and appreciation of others.

In the visual arts, fine arts refers to painting, sculpture, and architecture.

Experts say that art should:
Mirror reality or look like something in the real world
Be pleasing to the eye, even if it is not realistic
Express the artist's ideas, beliefs, and feelings so that others can understand them

Source: Art in Focus, Gene A. Mittler, McGraw Hill, 2006.

Do you agree?

Can you add other "should's"?

Why should you involve yourself in the creation of art?
Self-expression and creativity
Decision making and problem solving
Real world connections. The business world cites a need for creativity and problem solving.
Creating a work of art involves problem solving:
Clarifying the problem
Identifying possible solutions
Selecting and applying the most appropriate solution
Determining whether the solution resolves the problem
