assignment objectives:

1. Reflect your personality if you want a theme.

2. Have a center of interest

3. Demonstrate pasteup capability. No non-pasted edges.

the assignment: Pasteup the magazine photos you have collected to create a collage.

The collages should have a center of interest and should demonstrate good pasteup skills, meaning that all the edges should be flat on the surface. The size may be 8.5 x 11 or 11 x 17.

What is art?

The arts are a basic form of human communication. The visual arts, music, literature, and poetry may be considered the means by which people, past and present, express themselves in unique sights and sounds that capture the interest, imagination and appreciation of others.

In the visual arts, fine arts refers to painting, sculpture, and architecture.

Experts say that art should:

Mirror reality or look like something in the real world

Be pleasing to the eye, even if it is not realistic

Express the artist's ideas, beliefs, and feelings so that others can understand them

Expectations

I hope you have fun and learn something beneficial to you. At the least, you can get a good laugh when I make a fool of myself......which happens several times every day.

1. Be considerate. Treat others as you would like to be treated.

2. Start assigned work when the bell rings. Usually there is a 10 minute warmup, then a daily assignment. I usually grade your work during the last 30 minutes of class.

3. Be seated and listen when I am giving instructions. If you need to ask questions, raise your hand.

4. Work on your assignment the entire period. If you have finished assignments, work in your sketchbook or tutorials.

5. Follow all school rules and safety rules.

6. There are district and school rules related to cell phones and electronic devices. If you violate those rules, I have the right to take up, hold, and turn the devices in to an administrator. If you refuse, I will contact a campus supervisor.

7. If you have been absent, it is your responsibility to find out about missed work and make it up.

8. Treat desks, walls and equipment with the respect. Even accidental destruction is very expensive. You are expected to pay for damage and destruction and to replace any items you destroy at full replacement value.

9. Help maintain a visually pleasing room. This even means that everyone will participate in cleanup each day.

10. Please do not have food or beverages near the computers.

Photoshop work………..

To move objects in Photoshop, you should use the Move Tool

Compositing is another word for layering several images in Photoshop.

The best Photoshop tool for erasing solid color backgrounds is the Magic Eraser Tool.

To add new layers into a Photoshop document, you can click, hold and drag; or copy and paste.

Before you can make changes to a photographic layer in Photoshop the layer must be rasterized. 

To rasterize a layer, go to Layer>Rasterize>Layer or All Layers

To resize an image, go to Edit>Free Transform

To scale an image using Edit>Free Transform and keep the exact proportions, press and hold the Shift key while dragging from a corner.

Artwork: A work of art, artwork, art piece, or art object is an aesthetic item or artistic creation. The term "a work of art" can apply to:

 an example of fine art, such as a painting or sculpture

 a fine work of architecture or landscape design

 a photograph, film or visual computer program

 a work of conceptual art or performance art

 a production of live performance, such as theater, ballet or opera

 an interactive game

Still life: A  work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, flowers, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, and so on).

Line: a line is a path left by a moving point

Shape: a two dimensional area with identifiable boundaries.

Geometric shapes: mechanically drawn lines, squares, rectangles, circles.

Organic shapes: shapes based on forms of nature, which are usually rounded, irregular and curving.

Emphasis is given to an area within the design because that area is meant to be seen or is more important to be noticed when compared to other places of the design. Emphasis creates a center of interest.

Pattern: Two-dimensional decorative visual repetition. Motif is a unit that is repeated in visual rhythm (suggest movement through repetition). Units in a motif may or may not be an exact duplicate of the first unit.

Composition: The act of organizing the elements of an artwork into a harmoniously unified whole.

Know that: 

Artists keep sketchbooks for ideas.

Be able to:

Create a simple drawing that shows: a variety of lines, shapes (geometric and organic), pattern, a strong center of interest created by using emphasis. 

On a computer, be able to:

1. Create a new folder and name it according to directions

2. Open Photoshop if it is not open on your computer

3. Download a document  and open it in Photoshop

4. Color the document using the Paint Bucket tool

5. Save the document into your new folder according to directions.

The grid system

Use of the grid is an artist's method of enlarging a small image and transferring it exactly onto another surface. The grid method is an inexpensive, low-tech way to reproduce and/or enlarge an image that you want to paint or draw. The grid method can be a fairly time-intensive process, depending on how large and detailed your painting will be. While the process is not as quick as using a projector or transfer paper, it does have the added benefit of helping to improve your drawing and observational skills.

In a nutshell, the grid method involves drawing a grid over your reference photo, and then drawing a grid of equal ratio on your work surface (paper, canvas, wood panel, etc). Then you draw the image on your canvas, focusing on one square at a time, until the entire image has been transferred. Once you're finished, you simply erase or paint over the grid lines, and start working on your painting, which will be now be in perfect proportion!
