The grid system

Use of the grid is an artist's method of enlarging a small image and transferring it exactly onto another surface. The grid method is an inexpensive, low-tech way to reproduce and/or enlarge an image that you want to paint or draw. The grid method can be a fairly time-intensive process, depending on how large and detailed your painting will be. While the process is not as quick as using a projector or transfer paper, it does have the added benefit of helping to improve your drawing and observational skills.

In a nutshell, the grid method involves drawing a grid over your reference photo, and then drawing a grid of equal ratio on your work surface (paper, canvas, wood panel, etc). Then you draw the image on your canvas, focusing on one square at a time, until the entire image has been transferred. Once you're finished, you simply erase or paint over the grid lines, and start working on your painting, which will be now be in perfect proportion!

Culture Mandala

Culture Mandala

Assignment description: 

In this project, you will create a personal mandala based on images from your cultural heritage.

You could also use a sunburst or tattoo instead of a mandala.

Variation: Instead of your cultural heritage, you could use images based on an interest of yours. For example, if you love soccer, the design could be based on that.

Or, if you absolutely, positively, do not want to do Photoshop, this would work, in colored pencil and markers. Same idea, show your cultural heritage. Google henna hand for more ideas.

Standard 2.0 Structures and Functions
Students will use knowledge of both structures and functions.

Steps for Culture Mandala

1. Make a new folder and save it on your desktop. If you don't see this menu, the Finder menu, click any where on your desktop.

2. Select at least 10 high resolution images from the Internet that you want to use in your artwork. On a search engine such as Google, try words from your cultural heritage.

3. Make a Photoshop document, File>New, that is:
Width: 10 inches (be sure it is inches, not pixels)
Height: 10 inches (be sure it is inches, not pixels)
Resolution: 200
Color Mode: RGB Color

4. Put your images in the Photoshop document.

5. When you are finished, go to File>Save As>JPEG. Save onto your desktop or into your folder.

6. Find a high resolution mandala. Be sure it is square. 
You can add color, add gradients, cut out areas, etc. 

Add color, gradients and cutout areas, or leave the mandala the color it is.

7. Combine this mandala with your document containing the photos.

2) Do some small, quick, non-detailed thumbnail sketches of your design. This helps you plan it out ahead of time so you will create the best composition.

4) Once you have completed the previous steps and are ready to start on your final, lightly sketch the entire composition onto your final paper.

5) Ink and scan your artwork.

6. Color one version using Photoshop.

7. Color one version using traditional media such as colored pencils or paint.
